Why are the Railroad Stocks Selling Off

Why are the railroad stocks selling off? Good question. Not sure the answers are in yet but definitely we see money moving out of the sector - at least for now. Is it competition from plunging oil prices? Something else. You don't have to "know" the reason to avoid the pain as the larger money will alert you to what's happening when it gets underway - which is what we are seeing now.

Truckers definitely not selling off

The railroads are selling off which we looked at yesterday which is putting pressure on transportation index but that's not the case for the truckers. The real question is why isn't plunging oil showing up as a huge benefit to this sector. It looks like what may be happening is a subtle rotation to those transports that are going to see better margins and way from those that won't.

Long Dated U S bonds continue to be the safest trade

Long dated bonds have been and continue to be one of the safest trades available to investors. It's kind of counter-intuitive with the Fed no longer active in the market as they were with QE but clearly the demand remains out there is plenty of money that keeps looking for a safe home.
